The US president plans to use the Washington summit to counter reelection calls and discuss future aid to Ukraine with NATO leaders.
Prior to a NATO conference, US President Joe Biden denied reports of cognitive decline. In a surprise call-in to the cable news show “Morning Joe,” Biden expressed frustration with calls for him to withdraw from the presidential race for a different Democratic candidate.
Biden stated that anyone could challenge him for the Democratic nomination at the party convention in August if they believed voters would support them. He also expressed confidence in his ability to beat Donald Trump in 2024, stating that the Democratic nomination process was clear and decisive.
The White House denies Parkinson’s allegations.
The New York Times reported that Biden has been frequently visited by a neurologist specializing in Parkinson’s disease. However, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre denied the report and denied Biden has been treated or is taking Parkinson’s medication.
Outside of his yearly medical, Biden has not seen a neurologist, according to his personal physician, Kevin O’Connor. Biden is expected to use the NATO summit in Washington to press his case after a debate in June raised concerns about age-related issues.
What is the purpose of the NATO summit?
In addition to commemorating the alliance’s 75th anniversary, the three-day gathering will address the conflict in Ukraine and the rise of China’s role in international affairs.
For the third year running, the presidents of non-member nations South Korea, Japan, and New Zealand will be present at the summit, despite China’s growing military influence in the Pacific.
Outgoing Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced a $43 billion aid package to Ukraine, a reduction from previous aid packages that is expected to decrease further next year. However, the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine program will continue assistance for Kyiv in the future if Trump is elected, as Trump has suggested being less generous to Ukraine than Biden.
